this little shed is the home of Ann's gourds, her workshop and inspiration live here.

All this is done in Ann's shop here on beautiful
Edisto Island, SC.

All artwork is created
from gourds grown on
White Oak Farm using
a wide variety of techniques and media.

Designs are wood burned into the gourds which are then colored with leather paints, dyes, India ink, Gilders paste, Jacquard Pinata Inks, Lumiere
and Neopaque paints
among others. Feathers, horse hair, glass, yarns and other natural materials are used to enhance the effect and to finish the artwork.

Blue Eyed Bug Eye

In the low country Bug Eyes
are a haint one dasn't cross.
But just as Ann never puts
mouths on her snake gourds
she tempers the ominous
quality of this mask
with bright blue eyes. The
result is a colorful, whimsical
creation with a nice Edisto
feel to it.

A mild winter allowed a total renovation of Ann's gourd shop and an early spring has brought new inspiration. The new skylights in her workshop give her lots of natural light and the company of our new cat, Shadow, is a source of constant amusement.

A new mask has been created for the Edisto Island Historic Preservation Society auction and a new bowl delivered to With These Hands gift shop. A rattle is being designed right now and - if the weather continues in this glorious continuum - who knows what's yet to come?

May your new year bring you art, happiness, and the companionship of family and much loved pets.
