this little shed is the home of Ann's gourds, her workshop and inspiration live here.

All this is done in Ann's shop here on beautiful
Edisto Island, SC.

All artwork is created
from gourds grown on
White Oak Farm using
a wide variety of techniques
and media. Designs are
wood burned into the
gourds which are then
colored with leather paints,
dyes, India ink, Gilders paste,
Jacquard Pinata Inks, Lumiere
and Neopaque paints
among others. Feathers, horse
hair, glass, yarns and
other natural materials
are used to enhance the
effect and to finish the artwork.

Blue Eyed Bug Eye

In the low country Bug Eyes
are a haint one dasn't cross.
But just as Ann never puts
mouths on her snake gourds
she tempers the ominous
quality of this mask
with bright blue eyes. The
result is a colorful, whimsical
creation with a nice Edisto
feel to it.

With winter now upon us we've enjoyed some very nice weather allowing Ann to continue working on her art when of a mood to do so. Renovations, which have been a major distraction, are at a pausing point waiting for spring to allow us to paint the new ceiling without choaking on the fumes. The new skylights are giving us just the light Ann wanted and the greenhouse remodel has made it all seem spacious and warm.
Special thanks to our friend Mike who gave much needed help.

Unfortunately our much loved farm cat Miss Kitty died recently. She rests now in her favorite part of our secret garden under slate tiles and a birdbath as her memorial.

Thanks to Pet Helpers in Charleston we recently adopted a new family member, Shadow, a lovely 5 year old calico who is rapidly capturing our hearts.

All of this has taken our minds off of our usual routines but we both seek the peace that comes with a regular schedule and creative occupations. A new bowl has just been started and it must be excellent as Shadow has already smeared the paint.

May your new year bring you art, happiness, and the companionship of family and much loved pets. And if you are on the island go by With These Hands gallery and take a look at Ann's one of a kind artwork.

Magical because the colors are
a whimsical blend that nature
hasn't yet attempted but probably should.
